What is the difference between a mash tun and Lauter tun?

Welcome to Hebei YUBO Filtration Equipment Co.,Ltd.

What is the difference between a mash tun and Lauter tun?

Lautering refers to the process of separating sweet wort from the grain bed. In commercial breweries, the mash is frequently pumped from the mash tun to a dedicated lauter tun, freeing the mash tun for a new brew. Home brewers typically mash and lauter in the same vessel, called a mash-lauter tun, or MLT.

The lauter tun is the most widely employed wort separation vessel system in North America and Europe. Lauter tuns are, in general, designed much like infusion mash tuns, but they are wider and shallower. Like the mash tun, filtering is through slots in a false bottom that supports the grain bed. However, there are some big difference between mash tuns and lauter tuns. Lauter tuns are suited for use of under-modified malts and high adjunct rates. However, if the recipe has less then 50% malt, there will be insufficient husk material to form an adequate filter bed. The grists used in a lauter tun are finer, the mashes are more dilute, and the bed depth shallower all of which helps in extract performance.

Stainless steel wedge wire screens provide a false bottom in a lauter tun in many craft beer breweries. The lauter tun screen is necessary for a proper separation process.

Lauter Tun vessels are used in the craft beer brewing process between the mash tun and the brew kettle.  The lauter tun separates the barley husks from the clear liquid wort. The barley husks provide a natural filter bed through which the wort is strained and drains out of the lauter tun as a clear liquid.

Wedge wire screen is the preferred false bottom for lauter tun tanks in many breweries. The stainless steel wedge wire screen can be made in sections to fit through any man-way.

lauter tun/mash tun screens are custom built to your specifications. These wedge wire screens can be built as one piece/screen or in sections to fit through any size manway and are designed to sit on a ledge within the tank/kettle.

Primary tanks/kettle/brewing system uses for wedge wire screens:

• Lauter tun screen

• Mash tun screen

• False bottom screens

• Custom made screens for retro-fit or new installations

Improve efficiency and lautering speed with our wedge wire false bottom.  The term “wedge wire” means that the top of the false bottom has very thin slits for water to pass through, but the wires narrow (so the space widens) downward, better facilitating flow of the wort. Many false bottoms in small scale mash tuns are domed - this one features a flat shape, which means there will be an even grain bed depth within the kettle. Compared to a perforated false bottom, the smaller, longer shape of the gaps in the false bottom mean that fewer grain particles will slip through the gaps.
